The short version
For most things sold as aphrodisiacs — maca, yohimbine, ginseng, oysters — the evidence runs from thin to non-existent, and where anything shows up it tends to be in erectile function, not desire. The more useful frame treats desire as having an accelerator and a brake, with the brake mattering more. You cannot pharmacologically override a stuck brake. Desire is mostly context, not chemistry.

Every culture on earth keeps a list of foods, herbs and substances said to stir sexual desire. Are any of them real? For most of what gets sold as an aphrodisiac, the evidence is thin to non-existent. What the research does have to say about desire is more interesting than the folklore, and it points somewhere the folklore never looks.
The evidence, in plain terms
Maca: a systematic review of a small number of trials found “limited evidence” of any effect on sexual function, and the authors were clear that the body of evidence is too slight to draw conclusions from.1
Yohimbine: a meta-analysis of seven small trials in men with erectile dysfunction found it superior to placebo on erectile function, and its authors judged it relatively safe. Even so, the pooled result concerns erections rather than desire, the trials were short, and reported side effects included raised blood pressure, anxiety and a racing heart.2 It belongs in a conversation with a doctor.
Ginseng: a Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence of an effect on erectile function that was statistically detectable but fell short of the difference clinicians treat as meaningful — and it came from short trials in men with diagnosed mild-to-moderate dysfunction, not healthy adults hoping for an edge.3
Everything else, from oysters to chocolate to chillies to rose petals: nothing controlled worth citing. What they have instead is centuries of cultural association, and the association itself is the more useful clue.
A more useful framework: the dual control model
Researchers working with the dual control model describe desire as a car with both an accelerator and a brake. Arousal needs the accelerator engaged and the brakes released, and people vary widely in how strong each one is — so for some, easing the brake matters more than adding stimulation.4
The brakes are ordinary things: tension, the feeling of being watched or judged, unresolved resentment, distraction, tiredness, the sense that one is not entirely safe. No pill has been shown to release a stuck brake. A substance that nudges arousal signals upward is swamped by a nervous system still running its threat appraisal, which may be part of why aphrodisiac trials in healthy adults so often come out flat. They add horsepower while the handbrake is on.
Much of what gets called low desire looks less like a shortage of horsepower than a brake nobody thought to check.
What the research points to instead
Two decades of work with this model keep returning to brakes that sound too ordinary to matter: worry about performing, and the sense of threat inside a relationship. Both turn up repeatedly in research on sexual difficulty, usually in interplay with how readily a given person becomes aroused at all.5 Which points, unglamorously, at less pressure and more safety rather than at anything you can swallow. Novelty and a room that comes to feel like an invitation are often suggested as well, on thinner evidence.
What this might mean for your evening
If an evening has a lever in it at all, the more plausible one looks like the setting rather than the substance: an unhurried close to the day, a room that feels safe, attention going both directions. Whether repetition lets a room come to carry that association on its own is a further step, and not one these studies set out to test. None of it is a promise about anyone’s outcome. It is only where the evidence appears to point, and it costs nothing to try.
